Baggage Handling Systems (BHS)

Swanson Rink has an extensive track record, having worked in over 300 airports across the country. Specializing in providing cost-effective and constructible baggage handling system analysis, design, simulations, and construction services, we distinguish ourselves as a full-service engineering consulting firm. Our expertise extends beyond baggage handling design to encompass mechanical, electrical, and plumbing aspects of building systems, as well as boarding bridges and passenger checkpoints. This broad knowledge enables our team to fully grasp how the baggage handling system integrates with other critical airport systems.

Sustainable BHS Design

Swanson Rink has placed energy conserving, sustainable concepts at the forefront of our BHS designs for over 20 years. A baggage handling system presents several areas were energy conserving equipment and system control techniques can be successfully applied. Variable frequency drives reduce inrush current during conveyor motor starts and reduce the energy demand component of the total energy use equation. Swanson Rink was the first BHS engineer to apply VFDs universally across our BHS designs. Permanent magnet motors draw significantly electrical current during use and traditional conveyor motors, and despite their installation cost can deliver a lower total cost of ownership over the life of a BHS. Finally, BHS control strategies such as running conveyor motors only when a load is actually present can significantly reduce conveyor run time and the associated energy consumption.  When paired with VFD motor starting, the wear and tear of more frequent start cycles is reduced as well.
